Leash Lessons: Leave It Revisited
Today we revisit an early Leash Lesson. Let's see how Dante and Crokell are doing with Leave It! We ramp up the testing with Crokell's favorite high value treat. Tune in to find out what it is!
So, we had one of our RPG friends request more information on teaching their pup to leave it. To me, leave it and stop are actually some of the most important tricks for a pup to learn to keep them safe. In this one, I actually walk you through the process and we get to check on how much Dante has improved, as well as show how amazing Crokell is.
Sorry for the short text blog today. I hurt my wrist, and I am figuring out how best to type with one hand. Next week, we will try a dictated blog.
There is plenty of detail in the videos that isn’t in the text this week, so enjoy.
Leave It Revisited
One of our early Leash Lessons was Leave It. You can review the fundamentals here: https://blog.casasent.blog/p/leash-lessons-leave-it
Below we show how Leave It works with our big boof. He is such a love, and leave it, while not his favorite trick, is one of his best ones. He does look a bit like Snoopy acting like a vulture at times though.
Dante demonstrates Leave It, Stay, and the beginning of Focus (look at the handler). He does well, with just a few connections, mostly verbal using my error sound “eeeh!”
Chaos Tip of the Week
Self control starts in the smallest parts. It is one step away from self-discipline, but both take a constant effort. So, like Leave It, start small and you just have to level up your game. I am talking to you, chocolate and treats.
Chaos Question of the Week
What leash lesson trick or command would you like to see taught? We’re planning to do more of these next year and will be filming them at our friend’s sheep ranch.
~ Anna (and Tod)
PS - If you missed it, their favorite treat is carrots!

Leave it was one of the first commands I taught our Aussies. I still recall being surprised when my boy, Bixby, wouldn't even glance at me, while the girl, Quinn, would make eye contact constantly. It took some time to make him understand Look at Me. Focus would've been easier. But over the years, he's become much more confident and doesn't look away anymore. Surprisingly, he's also the only one who actually COMES the moment I call him, the majority of the time. Not testing him in a dangerous situation. Leave it, thankfully, has held. Stay, with him, has held. The girl requires a visible treat. :D
