Sunday Salutations: Roses and Critters
We take a break from blog fiction this week and dive into a photo album of Fall-like roses and critters. Come on in, the chaos is great!
Introduction
It is just getting cold enough for my roses. That seems like an odd thing to say, but Houston is an odd place when you are attempting to garden. My roses were getting sunburnt this summer, so we constructed a sunshade for them, because “full sun” in England is not the same as full sun in the Texas heat. Who knew?
Winter Roses
For long time followers, you might remember I LOVE roses, and their fragile beauty that is like a fleeting moment (https://blog.casasent.blog/p/sunday-salutations-and-fragile-uniqueness).

These are all from different bushes, we have collected over the years. The last picture is from a new replacement bush we got from Antique Rose Emporium here in Texas. We really like their roses. They tend to be more robust in our Texas burning heat.

These are again all from different rose bushes. The middle yellow rose, in cooler weather, will come out closer to a light brownish-tan color (apricot if you read their website). The roses in the last picture are from an inexpensive bush Tod brought home from a hardware store. It feels like nothing can kill that rose bush. It would take a sledgehammer and spring back, but then if you grew in a hardware store so might you.
The white netting in the background of the last picture is the 50% sunblock fabric Tod installed to protect my roses. After all their fragile little petals need all the help they can get.
Silly Critters
Our critters like the cooler weather - even the ones that stay indoors. Nothing like cool weather to make napping in a sunbeam more enjoyable. Or under the blanket if you are a princess.
We interviewed our critters about the change.
Aki said we should go away and let her nap. Another hour, another nap.
Beleth said he would nap during the interview. But he helped me type this up as well.
Crokell said he’d be outside. 55F is almost “Newfie weather” - cooler would be better, of course. And he didn’t see why we kept it so hot outside all the time.
Dante decided he was a giraffe, while eating his carrot. Nobody is sure why.
Fluffy declined all requests for an interview. But said she might have comments on the reptile expo. One never knows…
Chaos Tip of the Week
Always stop and smell the roses. If they’re burning, please extinguish them.
Chaos Question of the Week
How do you adapt to new weather conditions? Tod might bring out his light jacket. Anna is already contemplating having her parka out for early morning dog walks. She enjoys that hot chocolate is now a daily must.
How about you?

Oye and I loved the roses. 🧡 Could you tell us where Tod got the sunscreen?
As far as managing the temperatures, it's either a swamp cooler in summer or fleece for outside time. 🙂
